NOVEMBER MEMBER OF THE MONTH

IN HER WORDS…

When I got sober a few years ago, I found myself wanting to do something but not knowing what to do. I had never had hobbies besides drinking. A friend in the program invited me to try a three-day class pass, so I did and since then I've made the gym my second home. It provides the community I found in bars and raises that feeling of belonging to a much higher level than I've ever experienced with drugs and alcohol.

I lived inside my head for so long that I didn't really know my body and what it was capable of - I have always felt a big disconnect. Kristin has said that I entered looking like a baby giraffe. Like a lot of us, I had gone to gyms before but never felt comfortable. I didn't necessarily feel comfortable at first here either because I wanted to do everything I've never done before perfectly the first time, which is unsustainable. But I did feel encouraged to keep trying. The coaches were easy to talk to and everyone was so incredibly helpful and kind.

Eventually the movements became easier, and I made some close friends along the way.  I go just as much to hang out as I do to workout. I am looking forward to growing in my powerlifting practice. I also want to build my endurance in running, even if I bitch about it the entire time I'm doing it.
There are workouts I finish now that I never would have been able to complete a year and a half ago and I have an immense sense of pride when I think about how far I've come.  I am also really proud of how much consistency I have in my routine.

IN COACH KRISTIN’S WORDS…

I'm stoked to shine the spotlight on someone who embodies the very essence of our community, Lucy Newman! If you've been to a evening S&C or Powerlifting class, you’ve definitely met this powerhouse of determination.

Lucy walked through our doors a year and a half ago and instantly became an integral part of VCF. Her journey at Vitality began like many others', but what sets her apart is the fervor and dedication she brings to the table.

From day one, Lucy's spirit was palpable. I still remember meeting her after a few classes, and I immediately fell in love with her tenacity. There was an undeniable energy about her, a drive that was hard to miss. When we introduced our Powerlifting class, Lucy was among the first to dive in headfirst. Her commitment to this sport was awe-inspiring.

What makes Lucy a standout athlete isn't just her prowess in the gym; it's her unwavering resolve. She's the kind of person who doesn't shy away from putting in the work to achieve her goals. Before the Powerlifting classes, she'd diligently works on refining her balance and core strength, all in the pursuit of progress.

But Lucy isn't just a dedicated athlete; she's someone I've had the pleasure of connecting with on a personal level. One thing about her that instantly brightens up any room is her infectious laugh that is truly endearing, putting a smile on every face around her.

Lucy is what a like to call “a real one.” She exemplifies that phrase in every sense. Her unwavering support for Vitality transcends mere participation. She's there, front and center, at almost every event - whether it's within the gym walls or beyond. Her belief in our community is a testament to the bond we've cultivated together.

Reflecting on Lucy's journey from July 2022 to now fills me with immense pride. She's grown leaps and bounds and I know that this is just the beginning. Lucy, your dedication and belief in us fuel our collective spirit. I'm proud to know you and witness your fitness journey unfold.

Here's to Lucy and the incredible milestones she's conquered! Thank you for being an inspiration and a driving force within our community! Much love to you, friend.
