OCTOBER MEMBER OF THE MONTH

IN HER WORDS…

I joined Vitality at a time in my life where I felt like I was struggling to manage my mental health while being a full time teacher. I was looking for a safe space where I could work on both my mental and physical health.

So much has changed in my life since joining Vitality. I feel stronger than ever physically and more confident in my ability to take on challenges inside and outside of the gym. When I started I was apprehensive to try new things. It was so hard for me to trust that my body was capable of doing movements outside of my comfort zone. Now I feel so proud of the place I am in and so much more willing to attempt new things.

When I came into the gym I didn't really have any specific goals in mind other than feeling better in general. The celebrations came over time in the small victories outside of the gym like being able to squat next to my students desks without being unstable or making it to the 3rd floor without gasping for air. The most exciting change is that I am no longer suffering with Plantar Fasciitis! In the future I want to start going to powerlifting classes and work on my stamina when doing cardio based movements.

I am most proud of the relationships I have built at Vitality. Social interactions have been a challenge for me for as long as I can remember. The culture of the gym made it so natural to develop friendships with other members. I have literally cried on my way home just thinking about how grateful I am for my 5 am family and coaches.

Vitality is the most non-competitive and inclusive gym I have ever been to. As a person living in a larger body, I have had many negative experiences in gyms over the years. From the moment you walk into Vitality you feel so comfortable to jump right in! The coaches always have ideas for modifications to make all workouts accessible to everyone.

IN COACH KRISTIN’S WORDS…

Maria came to Vitality about a year in a half ago. She previously took a class with us back in the day and took her time to figure out when to start her journey. I was honored when she came back to us to start it. She came in with both a lot of positive, self-love energy and would give herself love and grace though her first few days. Maria is a teacher. This works to her benefit in understanding that new things take time and patience- and fitness is no different from that.

Maria started committing herself, religiously, to the 5a times. This is where she found her people. A crew that checks in with each other weekly. The accountability amongst these folks helps Maria stay consistent throughout the week. Even inviting along friends to join this crew over time!

Maria had a few aches and pains working against her, at first, but through suggested modifications and working with her coaches inside and outside of classes- she has overcome these obstacles and is stronger than ever. Challenges like running and jump rope, are now manageable for Maria through her workouts. Also, can we please take note of her beautiful Overhead Squat in the picture above! Incredible.

Maria has brought light into early AM class with her incredible attitude and smile. I am so lucky to have folks like her in our community, representing our Never Stop Growing ethos in such a real way. I have had the pleasure of coaching Maria in several morning classes since she started and have been able to watch her flourish as an athlete. Maria, you are such a fighter. You are resilient and powerful and have been an inspiration to your peers. I am over the moon proud of who you are and who you’re becoming. All your hard work is paying off!
